After reviewing 2012, I could not have asked for
a better year. As I began to write my Christmas letter,
I realized that I had been away from home for more
than three months. This year has been full of wonderful
trips; I will do my best to highlight some of the
more exciting moments.
After a 5 year hiatus, I spent 2 weeks skiing in St. Anton
am Arlberg, Austria with the usual January crowd of
great people whose company I’ve enjoyed for many years.
From St. Anton, I drove with Australian friends Penny
and Jerry to Prague where we met up with Sharon, a
friend of mine from Rehoboth MA. Together, we traveled
to Bratislava where, with the assistance of Matt, a 20
year old student who spoke perfect English, I was able
to trace my ancestry and locate my grandparents home town.
From Slovakia, we trained to Budapest where we spent 4
days in bitterly cold weather of -15C. The Danube, due
the extremely frigid weather, created frozen icebergs.
From Budapest we then travelled to Ostende, Belgium, a
small town not far from Bruge. It was very picturesque
and, in many ways, reminded me of Prague. At this point
in time, I had been on the road for a month and returned
home to a remarkably warm winter. This year, I planted
a veggie garden, a number of new flower beds around the
yard and had a new deck installed just outside my back
door in preparation for a hot tub that will be added
In June, I met up with 2 ONA girlfriends in Oklahoma
City and drove to Branson, Missouri. July 4, Jade and
I spent a week with my cousin Vallie at Lake
Pennesseewassee (Golden Pond) and celebrated my
friends Sandy ( former ONA F/A) and Chris’ 30th wedding
anniversary. Two weeks later, I returned to the same
location to celebrate Chris’ 80th birthday. The remainder
of the summer was devoted to taking care of my yard and
going to the gym where I discovered a new “high” in the
form of spinning. To round out the summer months for sun
and relaxation, an inlet beach, only 15 minutes from my
house, completed a terrific summer.
At the end of September, I went on the “dream” trip of
my life to Bhutan (1 week), Nepal (1 week) and India
(2 weeks) with Rosie, a ski friend from England. We
enjoyed the luxury of our own guide and private driver
and were treated like Maharanis. We drove over 1500
miles in India and really experienced quite a bit of
culture shock; it will be something I remember for many
years to come.
At year’s end, I am again in Washington, DC with my
friend Karen spending another Christmas together. Per
usual, there’s plenty to see and do to get one into the
holiday spirit. As 2012 comes to a close, I hope this
letter finds all of my friends in the best of health.
Jade and I would like to wish all of you and yours
the best in 2013.
