Perinchief, unidentified,
Capt. Ted Thornton and his
wife Lois above the Rhine
when we rented a car and
drove along the Rhine from
Wiesbaden after buying wine,
cheese and bread for a picnic.
I am always reminded of Ted and
Lois Thornton being killed in
a car accident in NJ on the way
home from JFK. He was a Capt.
and good friend who took his
wife on several flights I was
working.

Waikiki Biltmore now
Hyatt Regency

Three high-rise hotels opened in
Waikiki already in i e 1955,
the Princess Kaiulani, the Reef
Hotel and the Waikiki Biltmore,
which itself became a victim of
progress and was imploded to make
room for what is now the Hyatt
Regency Waikiki. Another hotel --
Henry Kaiser's Hawaiian Village,
which was not yet a high-rise --
opened its first 70 rooms.

It was the year Honolulu hosted
its biggest convention ever -
3,500 clergy and lay people
at the 58th general convention
of the Episcopal Church.

That year, 108,000 tourists
visited the islands, spending
an estimated $56 million.

Today, 2006, 177,756 visitors
are in the state on an average day.
They spend more than $11
billion a year.

Remember dancing under
the stars on the roof
of the Athena Hilton?

The Pink Poodle and the Pink Palace!

I wonder who remembers the
Waikiki Biltmore (now Hyatt
Regency Waikiki)

and the Pink Poodle
ice cream parlor
there?

The magic Royal Hawaiian
(now Sheraton)
before
the shopping center and
the twin towers? Eating at
the Cock's Roost in the
International Marketplace
before all the little kiosks
were there?
The Surfers at the Canton Puka
or Don Ho at Dukes in the IM?
Chuck's Steakhouse on Lewers?
Staying at the Reef on Lewers?

What happened to the Reef?

Tiny Bubbles with Don Ho ......

Playing bridge on the beach for
six days with the girls? Flying
from Boston to Las Vegas to Oakland
and on to Hawaii with ATS charters?
Al Harrington - The Island Man-
entertaining the troops on R&R in
the park at Fort Derussy in the
afternoon?

in Frankfurt for $ 5? Or the beer and
bratwurst on the corner by the Haupt
Bahnhof for 4 marks- 1 dollar! Flying
the Air Siam trips with split loads -
cockpit crew was ONA and the cabin was
Thai crew. One trip we had 3 baby
elephants in the cargo portion!

We brought the Lippizaner horses
from Vienna to NY for their show
at Madison Square Garden.
The wonderful summer nights in
Vienna?

Going to La Scala in Milan Italy
for an opera?
Laying on a stone beach in
Palma de Mallorca?
Flying from NY to McGuire
to Travis to Hickam to Clark,
Philippines to Bangkok
to India to Cairo to Frankfurt to
McGuire to NY and never getting off
the plane - DC8-63F.
4 pilots, 2 engineers and 2 navigators
and no passengers- they opened the
hold and closed it and we went on to
the next stop where they did the same
thing - wonder what we were hauling?
Lots and lots of wonderful memories
and super life experiences!

The reunion was the greatest! I hadnīt seen some of the girls in over 35 years. It started at noon--still going strong at 9--I stayed in N.Y. for three days-- didn't want to miss anything. On Monday morning I flew with Betty Broderick--Pam Suett to Belize (Central America) for 5 days. Most of my best women friends are the O.N.A. girls. Love Marilyn
Bob Hughes
I loved the reunion! Thanks to reunion organizers for putting this wonderful reunion together! Greetings Bob

The ONA reunion was a blast! There was quite a few people I hadn't seen in ages. I joined ONA in 1969. Lots of screaming and kissing! And even tears....boy how I miss those good olde days. We were young and fun and whipped around all different places in the world like we were going to the corner drug store. And we forged friendships that are still in place 34 years later! Amazing!
