BOBBIE FRANCES
BABYLIFT VIETNAM

I was the Senior flight attendant on the
Overseas National Airways DC-10 flight N1032F
from Honolulu, Hawaii to Travis AFB, California
on April 8, 1975. I still have the letter of
commendation we received from Paul K. Carlton,
General USAF Commander of the MAC command and a
letter from Sandra J. Fairburn, Captain USAF who
was the Flight Nurse on board.

We had 285 infants and young children and about
40 escorts to help. They had removed 22 babies
as I recall because of dehydration and they were
hospitalized in Hawaii. My first plan of action
was to find volunteers to man the baby changing
stations. I set up four stations - one at each
window exit. As the escorts boarded I assessed
which of the gentlemen might have lots of
children at home. I approached each with the
question, "How many children do you have?"
The ones who responded with four or more were
immediately drafted to stand diaper changing
duty. It was a good plan - we would pick up
the baby, note which seat he or she was in the
cardboard bassinette, and then deliver the baby
to the changing station. Then we would return in
a few minutes and take the clean baby back to the
proper seat. The poor guys rotated when they
were exhausted from being on their knees changing
diapers.

It was the most complicated operation, a constant
juggling of bottles to keep them hydrated. The
escorts actually did most of the bottle feeding,
but we had to constantly monitor and keep the
bottles coming. The only down side of the entire
operation was that by the time the flight was over
the entire plan smelled to high heaven with all
the dirty diapers!

By the time the flight was over I was madly in love
with several of the small children . They were so
anxious for love and attention that all of us were
holding them, hugging them and plotting how to
take them home with us! We were relieved to be
informed - whether or not it was true - that they
all had homes and loving people waiting for them.

I have all the names and some of the addresses of the
flight attendants on the flight.
Lots of pictures were taken, but my pictures from 40
years ago are hard to locate, even though they still
exist.
