CAPTAIN AL WINTERMYER

Al interviewed by Helen Wintermyer Lawrence

Al Wintermyer joined ONA in 1966 and
flew the DC7 for about a year as a co pilot.
He then flew the DC9 passenger plane for
about 6 months as a copilot and then became
Captain on the DC9 cargo plane where he flew
"log air" for about 3 1/2 years.

In 1971 he became DC8 Captain until 1977 when
he became Captain on the DC10. He was fur-
loughed in August of 1978 just before ONA
shut down.

After leaving ONA, he flew cargo for Airlift
out of Florida and then went with Air Jamaica,
New York Air, Arista International and North
East.

Finally, he wound up back with the "New ONA,
National Airlines". He was again furloughed
from ONA and flew for 2 years on the 707 for
Southern Air Transport.

Al then flew for Arrow Air on the DC8 both
Passenger and Cargo. In 1990 he went with
Tower Air as a 747 Captain, check airman and
simulator instructor. He retired from
aviation after flying Gulfstream charters
for Excel Aire.

Al spends his time now playing with cars and
his grandchildren. He owns a 1941 Mercury
Business Coupe.

Al has 13 years of great memories with ONA.
Of all of his airline experiences, he states
that ONA was by far the best airline.

" It was phenomenal. "

He met the best people and along the way
got 3 type ratings.

CREW COLLEAGUES
Eddie Kaye and Al flew together
quite a bit. Once in the passenger
area while waiting to board our
flight, Al and Eddie were crew.
As they came walking through the
passengers to board the aircraft,
I overheard one of the passengers
say: "Look, those to kids are
flying our plane"...
