MISS ONA

HEY HEY ONA!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

ONA CREW! Thank you for this year!

What´s your best ONA Christmas Aviation Memory?

DAVID WILLIAMS
My best is being with my family and
watching the kids opening their Christmas
gifts. One time we took the grand kids
to Disney for Christmas and to see the
look on their faces when the light parade
came down Main Street.
Merry Christmas from David
KARIN ARNDT
It's not the best memory, but the
only ONA Christmas memory ... a
return flight from Frankfurt. Due
to snow, we could not land in New
York and diverted to Toronto for
refueling, where we got stuck when
our plane could not be de-iced.
We and our passengers, all military,
were bused to a Holiday Inn and we
spent Christmas Eve in our hotel
room. I brought out an ornate Christmas
candle that I had bought in Frankfurt
and one of the other stews got a small
branch off the Christmas tree in the
lobby. We put the candle by the branch,
lit the candle and sang a few songs.
Could have been worse.
Merry Christmas to one and all!
Cheers, Karin Arndt

INGRID AND WARREN VEST
THANKSGIVING 2012

Ingrid and I had a big Thanksgiving week.
Tuesday the 20th our two sons put on a big
party to celebrate our 50th wedding
anniversary. Without ONA it would not
have come about. I was an ONA DC-6 Captain
based in New York and Ingrid was an ONA
Ground Hostess in Frankfurt. Our first
meeting was in April 1960 during one of
my Shannon-Frankfurt-Shannon turnarounds.
She was qualified as a Flight Attendant
in order to cover for any flight attendant
sickness out of Frankfurt. When she would
work a trip to New York and I was not on a
trip we would get together and see the
sights of New York and the Jersey Shore.
When the military contract ended in the
Fall of 1960 I was transferred to Oakland,
CA to fly the DC-7 and Ingrid immigrated
to the USA. A few months after arriving in
New York she became a TWA flight attendant
based in New York and later transferred to
Boston. The enormous ONA reduction in force
during early 1961 put me out of work and I
accepted the Chief Pilot position at Air
Jordan in Amman.

I was hired by TWA in March of 1962 as a
supervisor of flying for Saudi Arabian
Airlines. All during 1961 and 1962 Ingrid
and I were corresponding and on November
20th 1962 we were married in Hampton, NH.
It has been a great 50 years and we will
always be indebted to ONA for bringing us
together. We recently attended a World
Airways Reunion and enjoyed the company of
Ken Healy, ONA Chief Pilot-Oakland in 1960,
Bill Hardenstine, ONA Director Operations-
New York in 1960 and Kenny Zask a great
aircraft mechanic at ONA and World for many
years.

I will attach a picture of Bill Hardenstine
and Ken Healy from about one year ago for
some of the old timers to enjoy.
Also throw one in of Ingrid and I from last
Easter.

Wishing everybody a wonderful Holiday Season
and a Merry Christmas.

JOYCE OLSON MATTHEWS
My best ONA Christmas memory was being
in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia during the
Christmas Season. ONA did everything
they could to make it merry. I think
the photo that I have attached was taken
onboard the Galaxy (our floating hotel
in the Red Sea). It was probably taken
in 1974. If my memory serves me correctly,
I think I actually made it home just in
time to spend Christmas Day in
Connecticut with my parents.

I think it was my first Christmas
flying in 1969, and on Christmas Eve
we flew a charter out of Detroit to
Spain, I was the only American girl
on the flight, all the others were
from Europe. One of them I remember
was Doris Hadol. On Christmas night
we went to a restaurant for dinner,
and made friends w/the staff, after
they closed the restaurant Doris went
in the back and made Crepes Suzette
with Grand Marnier.

It was a wonderful Christmas experience!
Sincerely, Annette Tracy

Mary Ann Ames Mills
One New Year's Eve we were in San
Francisco
airport getting ready to leave
and the airport crew shared their Xmas
goodies with us, cookies , candy and hot
cider. We sang a few carols and went on
our way. Love that city, maybe it's why
I make it my home now. Happy Holidays

Ken Zask
My ONA Christmas remembrance was the
first Hadj ONA participated in. If I
remember right , it was in 1971 and we
were flying them from Teheran, Iran.
It was Christmas time and we were in a
Muslim country. One of the flight crew
bought a Christmas tree and put it on
the aircraft in the crew baggage pit.
Maint took it off and brought it to
our crew hotel, the Jeddah Airport Hotel.
It was a beautifully shaped 4 foot tree.
Some lights were found and strung around
the tree. As for decorations, thats
another story, folded toilet paper and
kleenex, hair rollers, some nuts and
pencils. I was amazed that it really
looked good with little REAL ORNAMENTS on
the tree, but it was a reminder of home
in such a far off land.

JOHANNA DERDA
My best Christmas was when I was able to
work a flight to Europe and then head
home for a few hours. I think of those
trips often. The urge to do this now has
passed somewhat as I no longer have those
dear people in my life, however, my
“bucket list” has one more trip to
Switzerland on a Christmas eve on it,
will travel to Switzerland and visit the
small church where I attended services
with my parents. Its one of those
nostalgic events that one never forgets.
All my best holiday wishes to everyone,
Johanna Derda

LYNN NANNERY AVERY
I don’t have an ONA Christmas story to
tell, as I was able (luckily) to spend
all seven of those occasions with my
family. But, would an ONA Thanksgiving
memory count? I think it was 1971 or
’72 when my cabin crew was pulled from
our bid line in Spain and told we had
to work a flight into Nicosia, Cyprus.
When we arrived, (insert interesting
aborted landing story here), we were
told that we had to spend the entire
week in Cyprus and then return with
the same group of passengers. We were
a little upset at missing Thanksgiving
in the US , but the wonderful staff at
the Nicosia Hilton put together a
beautiful feast with turkey and all the
trimmings for us. The folks at Cyprus
Air also helped us with a 2 day visit
to Beirut when that city still looked
like the Paris of the Mediterranean.
All in all, not a bad detour!
Best of the season to all!
Lynn Nannery Avery

KARLA PHILLIPOU
Yes, considering that Cyprus is now an
occupied country, that occurred shortly
after your visit and Nicosia is now in
Turkish hands. My best Christmas was one
when I had bid to return in time to attend
my best friend, Pam Baughman’s wedding.
I was maid of honor. I was flying with
Stinky Davis and, as usual, something
happened to throw our schedule off and it
looked like we would not be home in time.
I even threatened to quit and buy my own
ticket home. Stinky was very sweet and
calmed me down and talked to scheduling,
so that all of my crew were able to be
home in time for Pam’s December wedding.
I miss my ONA family and wish everyone
a blessed holiday!

Bangor, Maine! Of course, we were
snowed in at that little motel were
we used to stay. We couldn't even
trudge down the road to the ...
White Elephant? Was it? But I had
friends in Bangor and one of them
with a 4-wheel-drive got thru to us
and brought board games and cookies!
We had a great time laughing and
challenging "one more game!"
Funny how you remember things!
